Here's what most people don't realize: a thermostat isn't just a thermostat. The 2017 Jeep Wrangler is a JK body style. The 2018 model is a JL. They're different vehicles, and the thermostat housings don't interchange.
I said '2017 Jeep Wrangler thermostat' in my order. They heard 'Wrangler thermostat.' Result: a part for the 2018 JL.
The mechanic discovered it after draining the coolant. It looked close, but it didn't seal. The vendor did accept a return, but only after I paid return shipping. Cost us $136 and a wasted afternoon.
That was the moment I should've built a verification checklist. Instead, I built it a month later, after I ordered a fuel filter for the wrong model. The thermostat was warning one. Oxygen sensor: zirconia is a type, not a part number
While the Wrangler was on the lift, the mechanic found an old code for the upstream oxygen sensor. 'It's a zirconia oxygen sensor,' he said. 'Don't guess from a photo.'
I typed 'oxygen sensor 2017 Jeep Wrangler' and got eleven results. The lesson: a zirconia oxygen sensor is a specific type, but type alone doesn't tell you the connector, the wire count, or whether it's upstream or downstream. The same engine can use different sensors depending on emissions requirements or build date.

Spark plugs: how much iridium is actually in there?

It's a tiny alloy electrode fused onto the tip. You're paying for precision manufacturing and longevity, not precious-metal volume.
That changed how I evaluate 'premium' parts. The question isn't 'is it expensive?' It's 'what exactly am I paying for?' With iridium plugs, the answer is tight tolerances. With adaptive suspension, it was features we didn't need.
One more thing. Per the FTC's advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), claims like 'OEM quality' or 'direct replacement' have to be substantiated. I now ask suppliers for documentation: part numbers, material specs, test reports. If a vendor can't produce them, I treat the phrase as a description, not a fact.
What I'd tell anyone buying Bilstein struts—or any other part
That one work order on a 2017 Jeep Wrangler ended up costing more than the initial quote. But it also turned a pile of confusing product names into a simple framework.
- If you don't know the part number, ask the person holding the wrench.
- If a product has 'adaptive' or 'zirconia' or 'iridium' in the name, ask whether your vehicle and use case actually need it.
- If a supplier says 'fits 2017-2018,' verify with a part number. 'Fits' is a hypothesis, not a promise.
- And if someone asks 'how much iridium is in a spark plug?'—answer them. There's no such thing as a stupid question, just expensive assumptions.
I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining options than deal with mismatched expectations later. That's true for our shop, and it's true for the customers who buy our metal parts. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions.
Also: yes, there are stupid questions. I've asked a few. The difference is whether you ask them before you order or after the wrong part shows up.
