First Articles Don't Lie

For a mid-size B2B operation like ours, that model isn't the right fit. We have repeat orders and known demand patterns. When the one-stop vendor misses a delivery because they're waiting on a sub-vendor for a process they shouldn't have promised, the whole line stops. The specialist, on the other hand, waits on no one for their core process.
So this advice is context-dependent. If your situation is a mega-program with annual volumes in six figures, my preference for specialists may not apply. But if you're sourcing quality metal parts without a large engineering army, trust the supplier who knows the line between 'we make this' and 'we buy this.'
Boundaries Are Specifications
Here's my opinion, restated without apology: if a supplier tells you 'that's not what we do,' thank them. They've just saved you a prototype cycle, a validation failure, or a field return. A boundary is not a weakness. It's a map of what you can rely on.

We'll also send them to someone who can. That's not false modesty. It's a sourcing strategy.
