Bilstein Shock Absorbers & Replacement Parts: A Fleet Buyer's 5-Step Checklist

If you're the person who handles vehicle maintenance buying—an office administrator with a small fleet, or the friend who got elected as the unofficial parts runner—you've probably learned the hard way that auto parts ordering isn't as simple as it looks. It doesn't add lift, doesn't change ride height, and doesn't try to be sportier. It just brings the vehicle back to the way it should feel.

When one of our senior drivers says his truck "drives like a boat," I order B4s—front and rear—assuming the truck is still stock. The exception: if the rear has been modified with a lift or heavier springs, I move the rear to the B8 5100 family instead.

The B8 5100 series is Bilstein's performance-height-adjustable line. The front shocks in the 5100 series let you set the ride height at a specific position (generally up to about 2.5 inches of lift). The Bilstein B8 5100 series rear shock absorber is a bit different from the front unit. The rear is built for applications with lifted springs or added payload capacity where the suspension's travel range changes. It has a larger bore and more oil capacity than the B4, which matters when the vehicle is loaded heavier or the suspension travel demands more control.

For the rear, we kept the stock-equivalent B4 because the rear height and spring rates didn't change. That combination works fine because we made a decision, not a guess.

Step 3: The 2001 4Runner headlight bulb—verify, don't trust

Headlight bulb replacement seems too simple to mess up, yet it happens all the time. The 2001 4Runner headlight bulb is commonly listed as a 9003/HB2 type (some aftermarket catalogs cross-reference it as H4). I've seen conflicting data across different websites. As for when to replace: the general rule of thumb in service shops is 3 mm. At 3 mm of friction material, schedule the replacement. At 2 mm, you're on borrowed time and risk damaging the rotor. This is a guideline, not a legal standard—your vehicle's manual may specify differently.

I didn't start with this process. In 2023, we had a brake pad separate from its backing on one of our trucks. That $800 repair—including rotor replacement and a tow—happened because nobody had measured the inner pads in over a year. We didn't have a formal brake inspection process, and it cost us. The third time something similar came close, I finally created this checklist. Should have done it earlier.

Step 5: Where can you sell a catalytic converter—legally and safely

First, know the legal landscape. As of January 2025, many U.S. states require catalytic converter buyers to be licensed, to verify the seller's identity, and to document the transaction. If a buyer isn't asking for documentation, that's a red flag, not a convenience.

Legitimate options to sell a catalytic converter:

  • Core recycling specialists. These companies focus specifically on converters and often pay more because their recovery process is more efficient. They will have formal intake procedures.
  • Auto parts suppliers. Some retailers run core return programs. These are less flexible on price but very clean for recordkeeping.

My experience: last year I sold a converter from one of our trucks. I went back and forth between the scrap yard closest to the shop and a certified core recycler about 40 minutes away. The scrap yard was faster and closer; the recycler had a higher payout and issued a proper receipt. I ultimately chose the recycler because finance can't accept cash from a scrapyard with no documentation, and our audit trail matters more than the $20 difference.

Before you sell, write down the part number, take a photo of the converter installed and removed, and carry your ID plus proof of vehicle ownership.
