Why I Now Single-Source Bilstein Shocks and CNC Parts (And Why You Should Too)

Single-source supplier is the better call for multi-process metal parts. Period.

After managing automotive parts procurement for our fleet maintenance and in-house fabrication team for over three years, I've consolidated down from 8 vendors to 2. The Real Trade-offs (Honesty)

Single-sourcing isn't a silver bullet. There are genuine downsides. For example, we still use a separate specialist supplier for our Toyota oil filter tool needs because those are standardized consumables, not custom parts. Buying them from bilstein would mean mixing a $45 filter tool into a $3,000 parts order, which complicates inventory tracking for our shop floor. It's not worth the complexity.

But for standardized consumables like filter tools or single-source branded items (like a Bilstein specific shock), the old specialist model might still make sense. It's about context.

And if you ever see a tech checking the signs car thermostat is bad on YouTube while waiting for a part? That's a sign your procurement process needs a fix. Or maybe just a new thermostat.
